One Sabbath, when Jesus went to eat in the house of a prominent Pharisee, he was being carefully watched. There in front of him was a man suffering from abnormal swelling of his body. Jesus asked the Pharisees and experts in the law, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?” But they remained silent. So taking hold of the man, he healed him and sent him on his way. Then he asked them, “If one of you has a child or an ox that falls into a well on the Sabbath day, will you not immediately pull it out?” And they had nothing to say.
Spiritual FOOD TODAY the scripture we are going to share is Luke 14:1-6, which records that Jesus healed a man with abnormal swelling while eating with a famous Pharisee on the Sabbath. At that time, Jesus was eating with the Pharisees watching him. As we all know, Jews work without rest on the Sabbath, which is against the law of Moses. Therefore, Jesus asked the Pharisees and the lawyers: "Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?" The purpose was to test whether they all believed that "trust in God and His divine guidance is the moral foundation of a righteous life." But they remained silent and continued to frame Jesus in secret, persecuting Jesus for violating the Jewish faith and law.
Many Bible scholars and religious moralists, such as church pastors, would agree with our sharing and interpretation of the theme of "Trust in God and God's Guidance Are the Moral Foundation of a Righteous Life" and believe that "trust in God and receiving God's guidance through religious teachings are necessary conditions for individuals to live a moral and righteous life. In other words, without such faith, it is impossible to live a truly moral life; this view is consistent with the philosophical concept of "Divine Command Theory", that is, morality is directly derived from God's commands."
Proverbs 3:5-6 tells us: "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight." This emphasizes the importance of trusting in God's guidance to live a righteous life. By quoting this verse, as this pastor suggested and explained: (1) Trusting God will provide us with the foundation for moral behavior and provide guidance and standards for a righteous life; (2) Through prayer and studying the Bible, believers can obtain God's wisdom and make moral decisions; (3) Establishing a true relationship with God will lead to our personal transformation and desire to live a moral and righteous life.
Pastor Rev. Nicky Gumbel once preached a similar sermon, citing Mark 3:4, on the theme of "Good or Evil?" The verse is the question that Jesus is about to ask: "Is it right to do good or to do evil?" Pastor Gumbel testified that he was once an atheist. At that time, he believed that a person's body, mind, and upbringing determined all his actions. Fundamentally, there is no absolute good or evil. Because if there is no God, there is no ultimate basis for morality. Therefore, there is no absolute standard of good and evil in the world. But deep down, Pastor Gumbel knew that there was a difference between good and evil. Although he did not believe in God at the time, he often used the words "good" or "evil" in his life. It was not until he was moved by the guidance of the Holy Spirit and met Jesus that he realized that there was a real God who created the moral law. God reveals the nature of good and evil through the Bible, especially through the Savior Jesus.
Pastor Gumbel concluded by saying that God gave people conscience, it is because Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to live in our hearts after he ascended to heaven, so we can tell what is good and what is evil. But now people's conscience has been stained and numbed by the secular world, so now we need God’s truth and preaching to sharpen it. Pray that we can all rely on God’s Word and the Psalmist’s teaching in Psalm 119:105 as a tool for God’s interpretation and decision: “The word of God is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.” It describes how God’s Word illuminates our path to live a moral life. May the Lord illuminate our hearts and minds in prayer and give us wisdom and strength for life, just as the psalmist prayed and praised in Psalm 25:21: “May integrity and uprightness preserve me, for I wait for God.”
