Jesus is the Bread of God, the Bread of Life
Jesus said to them: Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’ (Exodus 16:4) Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” “Sir,” they said, “always give us this bread.” Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe. All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of Him who sent me. And this is the will of Him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those He has given me, but raise them up at the last day. For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in Him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.”
A pastor shared this: In John 6:32-33, Jesus repeatedly compared God's means of salvation to eating His flesh and drinking His blood. The background of this metaphor is that Jesus is the "Living Bread from Heaven," that is, the final and only source of salvation that God gives to mankind in the New Testament era when He saves the world from sin. We Christians receive the Holy Communion. Luke 22:19 records the meaning of the Holy Communion, which is to commemorate the Lord Jesus. Its core is Jesus' death, which is equivalent to the presentation of the core of the gospel. Since we must observe the Holy Communion until the Lord's return, the meaning of the Holy Communion should also include the Lord's resurrection and return: (1) Eating the bread - symbolizes that Jesus' body was broken for us; (2) Drinking the cup - symbolizes that the Lord's precious blood was shed for us, and that God has established a new covenant with us through His blood. Therefore, 1 Corinthians 11:27 reminds us to examine whether we receive the Holy Communion according to the meaning of the Holy Communion and with the right mentality and attitude, otherwise we will violate the Holy Communion. Therefore, 1 Corinthians 11:30-32 even warns that some people will become sick or even die due to God's discipline.
The pastor then explained that in the Old Testament era, when God's people kept the Passover in Exodus 12:8, "they would eat the flesh of the lamb roasted with fire, along with unleavened bread and bitter herbs." Not only did they leave Egypt by the blood of the lamb, but they also had to eat the flesh of the lamb to have the strength to run the journey ahead. Therefore, we are not only saved by the precious blood of the Lord Jesus, but we also have to eat the flesh of the Lord to have the strength to run the heavenly road. They ate the flesh of the lamb with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. What does this mean? Leaven refers to sin, and unleavened bread refers to a sinless life. This means that when we eat the Lord's bread and drink the Lord's cup, we should not be stained with sin again, but should be sanctified and have a holy life. Eating with bitter herbs means that we should think of the suffering the Lord suffered for us and his tragic death on the cross, and we should also grieve for our own sins and suffer for the Lord.
In short, the Passover in the Old Testament commemorates God's salvation of the Israelites from Egypt. The Holy Communion in the New Testament commemorates the Lord Jesus' death on the cross for us, giving us the bread of life to redeem us. The Lord Jesus used the Holy Communion to replace the Passover feast, because the spiritual meaning of the Passover was fulfilled in the Lord Jesus. Therefore, Paul said in 1 Corinthians 5:7: "Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed." When the Lord Jesus was killed as the lamb for the Passover, he was nailed to the cross and shed blood to cleanse our sins. God gave Him the mission of salvation to overcome the wages of sin and die and resurrect. We believe in Him for salvation, and we will be resurrected to eternal life when He comes again. Therefore, Paul said in 1 Corinthians 6:20: "For you are bought with a price; therefore, glorify God in your body." May God's mercy and blessing enable us to know and obey that Jesus is the Bread of God, that is, the Bread of Life. Those who trust in Him will be saved and resurrected to eternal life.
