The Apostle Paul taught his young disciple Timothy, as well implicitly teaching us as believers to understand the Bible and follow the Word and teachings of God found in the Bible. He said: “But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
Spiritual FOOD TODAY, the verses to be shared is 2 Timothy 3:14-17. Especially the last two verses encourage us: "Knowing the Scripture Means Obeying God's Word" and call us to be His good servants and equip us to do all kinds of good works and good stewards. The basic content of the Bible has been revealed to us, and we know that it is a compilation of 66 holy books divided into two main parts: 39 books in the Old Testament and 27 books in the New Testament.
The Old Testament includes the ancient Hebrew Bible. It focuses mainly on the history, laws and covenants between God and his chosen people Israel, and prophesies about the future Messiah. The New Testament was written in Greek, it could have been written in Hebrew and then translated into Aramaic, Greek and any other language of the time, it focuses on the life of our future Messiah, who was born as our Savior Jesus Christ, and his gospel teachings as God's final plan of salvation, through the death of Jesus, to save mankind from evil and sin, otherwise mankind may face the punishment of eternal death before God, but when anyone believes in Jesus as the final sacrificial lamb, he will be resurrected with Jesus Christ. Jesus shed his blood on the cross, resurrected to defeat the death penalty, and having faith in his salvation, will receive the reward of eternal life in heaven reserved for him by God.
Therefore, a Bible scholar or pastor once said that the key to understanding the Bible is to accept the inspiration of the entire Bible. The entire Holy Book, including the Old and New Testaments, is the inspired word of God. As you study, remember that He inspired the words you are reading; God is speaking directly to you through them, as stated in 2 Peter 1:21, “For no prophecy (Scripture) ever came by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.”
Gospel writer Dave Branon from Our Daily Bread Ministries has written similar sharing and confirms the theme of “Understanding the Bible.” He cites Hebrews 4:12 to describe the power of God’s Word, saying, “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”
Dave Branon goes on to stress the importance of having a Bible in your mother tongue. It is so important that people in many countries are willing to risk their lives to have the Bible translated into their mother tongue. These translators are often ordinary Christians who risk arrest for translating the Bible into a language their fellow countrymen can understand.” Many Christian scholars have tried to gather some local believers to secretly translate the Bible because they believe that the Bible is essential for the local church to cultivate mature believers. It is not difficult to establish a church, but without the Bible in the mother tongue, faith is usually impossible to pass on to the next generation. Therefore, no book can be preserved for thousands of years like the Bible, and can also truly and accurately reveal a person’s inner state.
As we have discussed above, the Bible is "living and active, able to discern the thoughts and intentions of the heart" and "all Scripture is inspired by God." More importantly, the Bible reveals the origin and facts of "salvation through faith in Jesus Christ." When we are given these resources, let us help people around the world have the message of the gospel and let people "Knowing the Scripture Means Obeying God's Word."
