Scripture 经文： “耶稣回答说：人若爱我，就必遵守我的道；我父也必爱他，并且我们要到他那里去，与他同住。” ；Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.” (约翰福音 John 14:23)

Premarital counselor Kalila Borghini once said that unconditional love is a concept that is often mentioned in religious, spiritual and secular contexts. From a therapeutic perspective, she said that it is impossible for adults to have unconditional love; in fact, all adult love is based on certain expectations and requirements. Because adult love comes with expectations and requirements, it is conditional. So, what can we say about God's love? A pastor believes that in religious and spiritual contexts, some people may say that God's love is unconditional, but in our faith, we know that God does have expectations and requirements. Because, in the scripture we quoted today, Jesus said: "If a man loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him ..." If people do not meet these expectations, although God will not stop loving them, they should do better next time because God is patient, appreciates efforts, and does not expect perfection.
Another pastor also mentioned why so many Christians believe that God's love is unconditional, which is based on God's grace and mercy, but God's holiness, sovereignty and final judgment are also conditional. Unconditional love is complete acceptance, and conditional love is discipline. God demonstrated His love to mankind through Christ’s death on the cross, atoning for mankind’s sins and ultimately redeeming mankind’s sins.
Philip Wijaya, worship leader at Bethany Baptist Church, once said in a sharing session: “Conditional love or unconditional love is a humanistic psychology term that is not really mentioned in the Bible. However, God’s love is revealed in many places in the Bible, Psalm 136 is eternal love, 1 John 4:16-18 is perfect love, Psalm 33:5, 143:8 and Exodus 15:13 is loving love, and the apostle Paul expressed infinite love in Ephesians 3:16-19. Therefore, God’s love is often described as unconditional because the deepest part of human hearts desires to be loved and accepted unconditionally and without reservation. This kind of love and acceptance can only be given by a self-sufficient being like God.”
May God have mercy on our human weaknesses, strengthen our faith, and help us accept Jesus as our personal Savior. His suffering and blood cleanse us from our sins, free us from the death penalty for our sins, and allow us to live righteous lives and maintain holy lives because God is holy, otherwise we would not be able to pass the judgment and have access to Him. Pray that we can all hear the comforting words of the author in Hebrews 9:27-28, where he says, "As it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment, so Christ was sacrificed once to bear the sins of many; and He will appear a second time, not to bear sin but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for Him."
