; For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written: “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.” Where is the wise person? Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.
The scripture shared in 今日灵粮 Spiritual FOOD TODAY》 is 1 Corinthians 1:18-25. Many pastors have explained this passage in their sermons on the theme of "The Essential Relationship Between Christians and the Cross," emphasizing that the cross is the core and indispensable element of Christianity, the soul of the gospel; without the cross, faith ceases to exist. This passage teaches us that although the message of the crucified Savior may seem foolish to non-Jews and a stumbling block to Jews, it represents God's power and wisdom to those who are called to be children of God, vessels of God, and to proclaim the gospel of salvation. Our sharing today is primarily based on 1 Corinthians1:18-25, which states, "The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God." Today is Good Friday, and we will quote some important passages, including 1 Corinthians 15:3-4, which defines the gospel as Christ dying for the sins of the world and rising again on the third day — a resurrection we will celebrate at the upcoming Easter; and 2 Corinthians 5:21, which explains that God made Christ sin so that believers might become the righteousness of God. He rose again with Christ at Easter, saving us from the punishment of human sin, selfish evils, and the control exerted on others and nations through proxy wars, trade, and monetary sanctions, thus saving us from human suffering and destruction. Through the resurrected Jesus Christ, we also receive redemption and inner peace through His grace.
Recently, my niece, Wendy Ling, forwarded me an article shared by a pastor, describing how the Apostle Paul underwent a radical transformation through Christ. Paul maintained a profound relationship with Christ, as he said: “By this cross the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world” (Galatians 6:14). This pastor explains that everything for a Christian depends on their relationship with the cross. Their spiritual life and value lie in their attitude towards the cross and how much the cross has accomplished for them. When we turn away from the cross, when we grow weary of it, our spiritual foundation crumbles.
This pastor points out that the Apostle Paul became someone God greatly used and respected not because he possessed special talents, profound knowledge, or extraordinary experiences, but because of his profound union with Christ — a union not forced or passive, but voluntary and worthy of pride. He not only saw the cross as … the cross was both the starting point of his salvation and the place of his victory. The cross was his life, his way, and everything he possessed. He longed to gain everything from the cross; he fundamentally refused to seek meaning in life elsewhere. The cross completely isolated him from the world; he saw the world as crucified, and the world saw him as crucified. Because the world crucified his Lord, he and the Lord were united on the cross. He saw the world as abhorrent, not lovable. He saw the world as an enemy, not a friend, just as James 4:4 says, the world is at odds with God.
There is an old Chinese saying: "The patient suffer, the victorious are rewarded." Christ suffered on the cross for our sins, enabling us to be reconciled with God, become His children, and be loved by Him. Christians, especially the Chinese who have suffered greatly from hardship, persecution, and foreign invasion, now see peace and hope in the Taiwan Strait and the Asia-Pacific region. Reconciliation and reunification between mainland China and the beautiful island of Taiwan are just around the corner. May Chinese Christians continue to pray for peaceful coexistence and mutual benefit for their motherland, Taiwan, and compatriots at home and abroad. The cross is not only a symbol, but also the concrete "word" of the Gospel, distinguishing the Christian faith from other systems of merit or religious rituals. Without the cross, there is no Christianity, for the cross is the concrete event of Christ's death, burial, and resurrection for the sins of humanity. As recorded in the Bible, He accomplished God's plan to purify hearts and connect heaven and earth. Our theme today is "The Essential Relationship Between Christians and the Cross," challenging human pride and declaring that salvation is a gift from God, not a result of merit or human wisdom. Happy Easter! May we remember that our Savior Jesus Christ died on the cross for our sins; He is the way, the truth, and the life, as recorded in John 14:6, where Jesus made this unique declaration.
