However, as it is written: “What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived” — the things God has prepared for those who love him — these are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. For who knows a person’s thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us.
The Holy Spirit can help you understand the Bible. You can pray before reading and invite the Holy Spirit to help you understand the Bible. You can ask the Holy Spirit to give you wisdom and insight to help you understand the story of the Bible.
Therefore, today's scripture, especially 1 Corinthians 2:10-12, explains the important role and work of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit lives in our hearts and acts as a comforter to help us walk in the path of righteousness and maintain a holy life every day, because God is holy. Similarly, when we read and try to refer to the Word of God in the Bible, the Apostle Paul described how the Holy Spirit helps us understand the Bible, "… all things God has prepared for those who love Him, He has made them known to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. For who knows the thoughts of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? In the same way, no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God …"
Yes, as many Bible scholars tell us, the Holy Spirit helps us understand the Bible in many ways. For example, He inspires us to understand, accept and apply what God says through the Bible. A scholar once explained this and called it the doctrine of inspiration by the Holy Spirit. Another scholar called it good news that God is pleased to give us the understanding given by the Holy Spirit, as Jesus himself told us in Luke 11:9-13, that we are invited to ask, seek, and knock, for our Heavenly Father will "move the Spirit to help those who ask for help from Him." This certainly applies to the revelatory work of the Holy Spirit.
In John 14:17, the Apostle John said that even the Spirit of Truth the world cannot receive, for it neither sees Him nor knows Him. However, we are believers, and you know Him, for He is with you, and He is in you to help you whenever you pray and ask. Without the Holy Spirit, we would never be able to understand the Bible properly.
God knows our weaknesses and needs, and as early as the Old Testament, God prepared this Comforter for us, as stated in Ezekiel 36:27: "I will put my Spirit within you and move you to walk in my statutes, and you will be careful to keep my laws and do them." Therefore, some pastors preach that the Holy Spirit lives in Christians and gives us spiritual eyes to understand and love the Bible. Furthermore, 1 Corinthians 2:14 goes on to explain, “But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him; and he cannot know them, because they are spiritually seen.” 2 Corinthians 3:14-15 reveals that when people without the Holy Spirit read the Bible, a veil is drawn over their understanding. They are able to recognize what the Bible says and may even acknowledge that it contains good morals and doctrines, just as the ancient Chinese philosophers or Indian Buddhists did. All of the message described in 1 Corinthians 1:18 — all that the cross of Christ and the gospel contain — is nonsense to them. It does not change them, nor does it make them understand it, because sin and pride have blinded them.
Pray that God’s Spirit will always illuminate our understanding of His Word in the Bible as we seek God’s guidance and ways to live righteous, holy, loving, and peaceful lives in our dealings with one another in this turbulent world filled with proxy wars, arms sales, and human suffering.
