I served the Lord with great humility and with tears and in the midst of severe testing by the plots of my Jewish opponents. You know that I have not hesitated to preach anything that would be helpful to you but have taught you publicly and from house to house. I have declared to both Jews and Greeks that they must turn to God in repentance and have faith in our Lord Jesus. “And now, compelled by the Spirit, I am going to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there. I only know that in every city the Holy Spirit warns me that prison and hardships are facing me. However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me — the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace.
The apostle Paul listened to Jesus’ call during his occurrence on the Damascus Road, repented and was saved, and was called to become an apostle, God’s messenger of the gospel. He was devoted to building churches and spreading the gospel, regardless of his own life. The verses talk about how he shed tears in his eyes in order to preach the gospel, and also experienced trials due to the many murder attempts by his own countrymen, the Jews. Now he said that he wanted to go to Jerusalem to preach the gospel as well. He was very eager and did not know what he could encounter. Whatever could happen, the Holy Spirit even told him in the prayer that there would be chains and tribulations waiting for him. However, he did not care about his life, nor did he regard it as precious. He only wanted to fulfill his mission of preaching and spreading the gospel, fulfill the ministry he received from the Lord Jesus, prove God's grace, and give the gospel of salvation to mankind. What he hoped for in his life was to devote himself to the mission of evangelism entrusted to him by God. The apostle Paul kept his faith and was waiting for God to reward him with the crown of eternal life in the future. According to the history of the church, he was finally imprisoned in a Roman prison for the second time. Around 67 ADS, he was martyred during the reign of Roman Emperor Nero, completing the mission of evangelism entrusted to him by Jesus, especially to evangelize the Gentiles., so that we as Gentiles can also have God’s inheritance and salvation, and we can all be called God’s children, receive grace and enjoy eternal life.
This morning in "Pure Joys", I read a sharing written by Rev. John Piper, "How to Hate Your Life." The pastor quoted John 12: 24-25, describing Jesus' admonition to believers that if we believe in Him, follow Him as His disciples, and preach the gospel and serve the world, we should not focus on life in the world. It is the pursuit of the salvation of the soul after death and the hope of eternal life. It is the hope that everyone can live with God forever and live with eternal life. In the verses, Jesus used a parable to say that unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only one grain; but if it dies, it bears many grains. He who cherishes his life will lose it; when we are still in this world, we may feel that we hate our life many times, but our Savior Jesus is comforting us, and we must keep our faith and lives until we are rewarded by Him in the next life. Come eternal life. This is what the theme of "今日灵粮 Spiritual FOOD TODAY" is about to share. It requires us to understand as believers that " Committed to Preaching the Gospel Without Thinking About Your Life."
The explanation Pastor Piper shared in today’s spiritual food asked, “Whoever hates his life in this world must preserve his life for eternal life.” What does this mean? This verses at least tells us that we don’t need to think too much about life in this world. In other words, it doesn’t matter what happens during your time on earth. For example, it doesn't matter if someone says nice to you; it doesn't matter if someone hates you; it doesn't matter if you have a lot of things; it doesn't matter if you only have a little; Forced or deceived, it doesn't matter; it doesn't matter if you're famous or unknown; it doesn't matter if you're dead.
More radically, however, we need to make some choices in these matters, not just negative experiences. According to John 12: 26, Jesus then said: “If anyone serves me, he must follow me.” Where to follow Jesus? He was going to the Garden of Gethsemane at the time and then to be crucified. Jesus didn’t just say: If you’re in a bad situation, don’t get upset because you’re going to die anyway. What He is saying is: Choose to die with me, choose to hate your life on earth, just as I have chosen the cross. Matthew 16: 24 records that this is what Jesus meant when he said, “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.” He calls us to choose that cross. Man can only do one thing on the cross, and that is to die on the cross. “Take up your cross” means “like a grain of wheat falling to the ground and dying.” Let’s make this choice! Therefore, if you are saved, you should not be afraid of death or dare to respond to Jesus’ “Great Commission” call to serve and preach the gospel. Only by dying can you have the opportunity to see Jesus greet you. Hope that every saved believer can live a life of serving and preaching the gospel, and receive the reward of eternal life waiting for us in the next life. Happy Friday everyone and have a great weekend!
When all this is said and done, in the summary of this sharing, "今日灵粮 Spiritual FOOD TODAY" would like to quote Mark 8: 34-35, allowing everyone to pray for each other, and encourage each other in the love of the Lord. In the verses, the Savior Jesus reminds us to follow Him on this difficult and suffering road of preaching and spreading the gospel, as if the suffering and dying on a cross, and that we must firmly believe and understand, “Committed to Preaching the Gospel Without Thinking About Your Life.” Therefore, in His evangelistic teachings, there is also such a conclusion, telling us, "... Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it.” May God have mercy on us and help us in our weaknesses, and may the Lord’s Comforter, the Holy Spirit, guide us in every situation. So that in our daily life, we may sacrificially preach the gospel and spread it to serve others. And thus, we may be entrusted and pleased with God, fulfilled with God’s grace and joy. Pray in the name of the Lord, Amen!
