;The Apostle James exhorted believers on how to live a holy life after being saved by faith and becoming a new creation, so that they can receive God’s salvation and eternal life in the future. He said: “You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that — and shudder. You foolish person, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless? Was not our father Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did. And the scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,” and he was called God’s friend.”
The verse shared in 《今日灵粮 Spiritual FOOD TODAY 》 is James 2:19-24. Especially in the last verse, the Apostle James reminds us how believers can perfect their faith and be saved, saying, "So then a man is justified by works, and not by faith alone." There is a Bible scholar with whom we may all agree with him emphasizing that true, saving faith is not just intellectual assent, but a living, active faith that is perfected through obedience. It emphasizes the inseparable connection between faith and behavior, indicating that sincere faith in God will always bring corresponding mutual kindness and love.
In the "Behold" column, gospel writer Xiao Gang 小刚 published a sermon titled "With Emphasis on Grace, Will God Still Pay Attention to Behavior?" He quoted Romans 11:6 to remind believers and deepen their thinking, emphasizing that "salvation depends solely on God's grace, not on human behavior or merit." The article emphasizes the exclusivity of grace and behavior in salvation, and believes that the two cannot coexist. However, he also asked: "If we emphasize grace, will God still pay attention to behavior?"
Xiaogang further explained that our religious terminology often emphasizes "justification by faith", so that we think we have been justified; we also emphasize "true knowledge", thinking that mastering the knowledge of salvation is enough. Little do we know that God judges our "behavior" according to our "knowledge"; and judges our "doings" according to our "being". As the Apostle James said in James 2:22, "Faith and behavior complement each other, and faith is perfected by behavior. True faith will inevitably make us willing to pursue "good deeds", and "good deeds" will also strengthen our "faith from grace." "
For so many years, perhaps we have taken too deep roots in a certain doctrine and have fallen too deeply, and we can't extricate ourselves for a while. Isn't it? From the pulpit on Sunday to the Bible study in the small group, we have memorized the "Acts of the Apostles" and talked about the "Great Commission" to death; but we have never walked out of the church walls, never thought about where Jesus' footsteps are now, and don't understand what it means to welcome the Lord's return at the end of the earth.
May we all agree with this conclusion: "Yes, even if we have received grace, God still cares about our behavior. Salvation is a gift through faith in Jesus Christ, not earned by behavior, but God's grace also motivates believers to live a life that reflects His character. Good deeds are not a means to earn salvation, but a natural expression of the renewal of life given by grace."
Let us pray with the gospel writer Xiao Gang, asking God to have mercy on us, help us, and enable us to have faith, to go to a higher level, to be kind to others, and to love one another. May we do what we understand and what we hear; may we quickly take out the silver buried in the ground and prepare to give an account; may I repent and turn to God, prepare His way, and make His path straight. May we walk with the church, grow with Christ, and fulfill the great commission of the gospel. May all nations receive the grace of the gospel, be justified, be saved, and have eternal life.
