This verse emphasizes that the "last days" will be marked by the appearance of those who deny the truth of Jesus Christ and His gospel. Although the final Antichrist has not yet come, his appearance foreshadows the arrival of the last days. Those who truly belong to Christ will firmly hold on to their gospel beliefs and the teachings they have received from the Old and New Testaments; while those who read the Old and New Testaments but turn their backs on biblical truth and Christian love show that they have never truly belonged to a Christian community that can live a holy and loving life. True biblical teaching and Christian love are both reflected in the two core doctrinal principles taught to us by our Savior Jesus Christ: (1) fear God and worship Him; and (2) love your neighbor as yourself. But the Antichrist has not received the teachings of the Bible and the gospel of salvation. In his “Turning Point in Life” column, Pastor Dr. David Jeremiah published a sermon titled “Bible”, citing 1 Corinthians 10:11 to remind believers and deepen their thinking. The implication is that it is easy for us believers to focus on reading only the New Testament and think that the Old Testament was “written for the Israelites”, but the Apostle Paul refutes this view in 2 Timothy 3:16: “All Scripture is profitable”. And, we must remember: Paul is referring to the Old Testament here, because the New Testament was just beginning to emerge in his time and had not yet been written.

Pastor David Jeremiah went on to explain that he gave a good example of Paul’s consistency between words and actions, which can be found in 1 Corinthians 10:1-13. Paul reminded the Corinthians to look to the history of Israel. The pastor reminded Christians that when we seek God’s guidance, we can find principles from various parts of the Bible to help us make decisions. Paul even cited the same examples from Israel’s history to warn the Corinthians to stay away from idolatry, sexual immorality, tempting the Lord, and complaining about the Lord, just like false believers and the Antichrist. We can understand this by seeing how severely God dealt with and disciplined the Israelites in these areas. Likewise, we, the latter-day believers living in the New Testament era, must be alerted and guided to avoid mistakes in order to keep ourselves on the safe side of salvation. Paul even warned us in 1 Thessalonians 5:22 to guard against the “every kind of evil” described by the Antichrist: Flee! Don’t do it! Pray for God’s Holy Spirit to be infused into our daily Christian lives. As Pastor David Jeremiah teaches, if the Bible is profitable, we will be able to benefit from the gospel, faith teaching, and guidance of the Holy Spirit in all 66 books of the Bible! Therefore, the Apostle Paul still cares for us believers in Romans 13:11 and gives this advice: “And you know that it is high time to awaken from sleep, for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed.”
