Perhaps most tragically, the same problems plaguing our culture exist within the church. Thus, the apostle Paul counseled some fallen believers in the Corinthian church, saying: “Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body. Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore, honor God with your bodies.” (哥林多前书 1 Corinthians 6:18-20)

This passage opposes the view of the body as a vessel for the Holy Spirit; instead, it emphasizes that the human body belongs to God and should be respected. The concept of sexual sin as "a symptom, not a disease" is not directly expressed in this passage, but can be interpreted as indicating that such sin is a manifestation of deeper issues, such as a confused view of the body or a false sense of sexual freedom, rather than a problem with the body itself. Therefore, one Bible scholar suggests that Paul believed some in the Corinthian church had distorted the concept of Christian freedom, believing they were free to indulge in any behavior, including sexual immorality, because their hearts were free. In this context, sexual immorality is a manifestation of a distorted understanding of freedom.

Rev. John Piper published a similar sermon in his sermon column, titled "Why Did You Give in to Sexual Sin?" This sermon serves as a reminder and prompts deeper reflection for believers. He quotes King David's prayer from Psalm 42:11, noting that David's prayer, however, was for God to grant him the joy of salvation and, more importantly, a willing Spirit to sustain him. Therefore, Rev. Piper asks: Why didn't David pray for abstinence? Why didn't he pray for God to help him shoulder his responsibilities as a man? Why didn't he pray for God to cover his eyes and cleanse his heart? David wrote this psalm of repentance after committing adultery with Bathsheba, so you might expect him to pray in this way. Rev. John Piper goes on to explain that David didn't pray this way because he knew sexual sin was a symptom, not the disease itself. The real problem is that people haven't received the full teaching of Christ about marriage and the spiritual joy of a Christian family, which is why they succumb to sexual sin. Their hearts aren't stable enough; they waver and are easily tempted. Because God doesn't have the rightful place in their hearts, they succumb to sin.

David, through prayer, shows us that what sexual offenders truly need is spiritual joy in God, purity of mind and body, and a happy marriage and Christian family that pleases God. Brothers and sisters, this is profound wisdom. Therefore, the Apostle Paul encouraged believers in 1 Corinthians 7:2: "But to avoid the temptation to sexual immorality, let each man have his own wife, and let each woman have her own husband." Similarly, Hebrews 13:4 also warns Christians, especially married people: "Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral." May God have mercy and grace, and may the Holy Spirit's counsel help us live a joyful and holy life. Sexual sin is a symptom, not a disease. God will forgive those who sincerely confess their sexual sins to Jesus.
