There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works, just as God did from his. Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will perish by following their example of disobedience.
The scripture shared in《今日灵粮 Spiritual FOOD TODAY》 is Hebrews 4:9-11. It raises a question hoping that we believers can fully understand as to how to "Find Joy, Glory, and Provision in the Lord on the Sabbath." The Bible teaches that observing the Sabbath, the Lord's Day, a day of rest and worship, brings renewal of body and mind, joy, a closer relationship with God, and assurance of His provision and eternal rest.
The Old Testament emphasizes specific blessings associated with Sabbath observance, for example: (1) Genesis 2:2-3 clearly tells us, “After God blessed and created all things, he made the seventh day holy.”; (2) Isaiah 58:13-14 reminds us, “If you forsake personal pleasure on the Sabbath and call it joy, you will have joy, honor, and provision in the Lord.”; and (3) Ezekiel 20:12 reminds us, “God set the Sabbath as a sign between Him and His people, that they have been sanctified.”
The New Testament shifts the focus from legalistic Sabbath observance to the principle of Sabbath and its realization in Christ. The early church often gathered on the first day of the week, “Sunday,” likely to commemorate the resurrection of Jesus. Mark 2:27-28 reveals: “Jesus said, ‘The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.’” This confirms the scripture we are quoting and sharing today, Hebrews 4:9-11, which speaks of the “Sabbath rest” still enjoyed by God’s people, referring to the spiritual rest obtained through faith in Christ, and foreshadowing eternal rest.
In his sermon titled "How Can We Not Pursue God?", Pastor Rev. John Piper, in his "Pure Joy" column, quoted Isaiah 58:13-14, emphasizing, "If you refrain from pursuing your own desires on the Sabbath and call it joy, you will find joy, honor, and provision in the Lord." Pastor Piper went on to explain that we might pursue God without glorifying Him. If we want to glorify God, we must pursue the joy of fellowship with Him. Pastor Piper then used the Sabbath as an example. God rebukes His people for pursuing "their own" pleasures on the holy day. But what does this mean? God is referring to His people seeking pleasure in private matters, rather than finding joy in God's goodness. He is not rebuking their hedonism, but rather the flaw in the pleasures they pursue. They are satisfied with worldly gains, thus exalting these gains above God. Enjoying God and glorifying God are one and the same. God's eternal purpose and our eternal joy are one.
In conclusion, what we share today with Pastor John Piper's quote in Isaiah 58:13-14 and ours from Hebrews 4:9-11 will likely focus on the theme of rest in glorifying God and true worship, contrasting it with self-righteous efforts. Hebrews 4:9-11 calls believers to enter into God's "Sabbath rest" through faith in Jesus, which means ceasing one's own actions and ceasing the effort to earn salvation. Isaiah 58:13-14 similarly calls us to establish "Sabbath observance," not out of obligation, but out of delight in the Lord, ceasing our own actions, and acknowledging the Lord's holiness.
