你信这话麽?; Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?”.
The passage shared in《今日灵粮 Spiritual FOOD TODAY》 is John 11:25-26. Many biblical scholars and pastors have interpreted this passage, believing that Jesus' actions regarding death and His interaction with death can be understood through several key events recorded in the Bible and their theological significance:
(1) Manifestation of Authority: The Bible records Jesus raising many people from the dead through miracles, demonstrating His direct authority over physical death, such as Lazarus in John 11, the young woman in Mark 5, and the widow's son in Luke 7. These actions definitively prove His divine power and confirm His declaration in John 11:25-26: "I am the resurrection and the life." This is also the focus of our discussion in our《今日灵粮 Spiritual FOOD TODAY》; (2) Atoning Sacrifice: Jesus' main action regarding death is His own crucifixion. He was sinless, yet He bore the punishment for human sin — spiritual death — and was therefore nailed to the cross, dying for humanity. His actions established a new covenant, bringing forgiveness of sins and reconciliation with God, as recorded in Matthew 26:28 and 2 Corinthians 5:21, and revealed in Hebrews 2:14-15 and Romans 6:9. He conquered death forever; finally, (3) through His death and resurrection, Jesus removed our fear of death, gave us eternal life, and made us be with God in the age to come. He saved those enslaved by the fear of death, giving them peace and the assurance of eternal life before God. Through faith in Jesus, one can receive the gift of eternal life, a spiritual life of being with God that begins now and transcends physical death.
Pastor John Piper published an article in his "Pure Joy" column entitled "How Did Jesus View Death?", which quoted Hebrews 9:27-28. In this passage, Pastor Piper explains that Jesus bore our sins and died for us. This is the core of the Christian faith, the essence of the Gospel, and the nature of God's great redemptive work on earth. Jesus Christ did not bear his own sins, but ours; he was crucified for our sins, freeing us from them.
Pastor Piper further asked, if this is true, then what does death mean for us? The author of Hebrews in chapter 9 says in verse 27, "Everyone must die once." Because Jesus Christ died for us, our sins have been forgiven, so our death is no longer punishment, no longer the penalty for sin. Through the death of Jesus Christ, our sins are forgiven, because Jesus Christ bore the penalty for sin. So why do we still experience death? Because God's will be for death to remain in the world, so even His children must experience death, thus continually demonstrating the extreme horror of sin. When we die, we also reveal the external consequence of sin: death. But for God's children, death is no longer God's punishment, because the death of Jesus Christ stopped God's anger towards us. Death becomes our gate to the Kingdom of Heaven; we are no longer condemned. Therefore, we can joyfully share the themes of our《今日灵粮 Spiritual FOOD TODAY》 without worrying that our sins will not be forgiven, because "Jesus Has Broken the Power of Death for All Who Believe in Him."
