Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.

The scripture shared in《今日灵粮 Spiritual FOOD TODAY》 is Colossians 3:23-24. Many of us have encountered, or may have encountered, difficult, unfriendly, or unfair leaders. In my career as a management accountant (CMA) and professional accountant (CPA), like many other professions, the workplace has sometimes been challenging, leading to complaints, apathy, and even resignations. However, the God of the Bible does not promise that we will only work for “good and mild” people. He provides us with a framework for working under “unjust” leadership, as the Apostle Peter describes in 1 Peter 2:18, where God expects our obedience. Because we know that our ultimate overseer and boss is not our superior, but our Savior Jesus Christ.

Therefore, we must quickly adjust our mindset to endure difficult and unfair leadership with obedience, and serve our superiors as we would serve Jesus, not as we would serve a person. The scripture we're quoting, Colossians 3:23-24, explains that when your boss is unreasonable or demanding, remind yourself that you are serving Jesus and re-examine the person you are serving. Your work itself is a form of revere. As the scripture we're quoting today says, "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord and not for men, because you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving." Therefore, even when treated unfairly, submit with respect, as explained in 1 Peter 2:18. Submission is not condoning wrongdoing or tolerating abuse, but maintaining respect, not becoming a "vigilante" or resorting to passive aggression. Luke 6:28 encourages us to choose blessing over cursing, to pray for our bosses, asking them to repent and become wise, rather than praying for their destruction. As Proverbs 15:1 reveals, a gentle response can ease tensions. Ephesians 6:5 also mentions this.

In Romans 12:17, 19, the Apostle Paul teaches us to trust in God's justice and not to seek revenge. When you suffer injustice, trust that God sees all injustice and will vindicate you in His appointed time. In Psalm 37:5, King David even warns us against making wild guesses, such as spreading rumors or seeking revenge. Instead, He tells us to "commit your ways to the Lord." A bad boss can breed resentment or tempt you to laziness. Work wholeheartedly as a testimony to your faith. Most importantly, guard your heart, for the source of life is within you. As Proverbs 4:23 says, don't let a bad boss turn you into a bad employee. Work "diligently," as Ephesians 6:5 encourages.

Pastor Rev. John Piper shared this in his blog post, "How to Serve a Bad Boss," quoting Ephesians 6:7-8. This passage calls us to live a completely Lord-centered life. This means that we should remember the Lord in our work. It also calls us to be good people in the workplace. A Lord-centered life means being a good person and doing good. Jesus said that when we shine, people will see our “good deeds” and give glory to our Father in heaven.

Pastor Piper further emphasizes that God owns you and the entire universe; He owes us nothing. However, out of grace, He delights in rewarding the good we do in faith. Your humble position on earth will not prevent you from receiving abundant rewards in heaven. As Ephesians 6:8 says, whether you are a slave or a free man, the Lord will reward every good deed you do. Your boss may think you are insignificant, or may not even know you exist. But that doesn't matter; the Lord knows you, and He will reward you. Therefore, serving a bad boss out of a desire to glorify God is itself a “good thing,” as 1 Peter 2:19-20 says. Your reward is not in your salary or your boss's approval, but in God, who examines your every word and deed. Romans 5:3-4 also points out that this is a test that can refine your character, patience and the hope of doing good.
